It’s a moot point whether or not we live at the most violent time in history. Other generations had their vandals, race riots and war atrocities.

But certainly no other age has worried so much about violence. To judge from the news media alone, it would seem to be simultaneously our favourite hobby and our chief fear.

But, as Colin Ward points out it needs more than a horror of violence to get rid of it. Violence is built into the very structure of our society, and won’t be eliminated until that structure is changed.
